Can You Install a Level 2 EV Charger on a 100-Amp Electrical Service in Richmond Hill?

A 100-amp electrical service does not automatically mean you cannot install a Level 2 EV charger.

For many Richmond Hill homeowners, the real question is whether the existing electrical system has enough available capacity to support the charger safely. That depends on the home’s current electrical load, the charger output and the other equipment already connected to the service.

For example, some drivers may not need the fastest charging rate available.

If the vehicle is normally parked overnight and the driver only uses part of the battery each day, a lower charging rate may still provide more than enough time to recharge.

The Vehicle Also Limits Charging Speed

The charger is only one part of the charging system.

The vehicle itself has a maximum AC charging rate.

If the vehicle cannot accept the full output of a high-powered charger, installing a larger charger may provide little or no charging benefit.

A properly sized charging setup should consider:

  • Daily driving distance

EV charging is often flexible.

Most homeowners do not need the vehicle to charge at maximum speed every minute it is plugged in.

If the car is parked overnight for eight or ten hours, there may be plenty of time to recharge even if the charging rate changes during that period.

That flexibility can make EV charging well suited to energy-management systems.

The suitability of this approach depends on the specific home, charger and electrical service.

When a 200-Amp Upgrade May Make More Sense

Even if a charger can technically be installed without increasing the service size, a homeowner may still decide that a 200-amp upgrade makes sense.

This is especially true if other electrical upgrades are planned.

For example, the homeowner may also want to add:

  • A heat pump
  • An induction range
  • Electric water heating
  • A hot tub
  • Another EV charger
  • Major basement or kitchen renovations

In that situation, preserving the 100-amp service may provide less flexibility in the future.

A larger service can create additional capacity for later projects.

The Electrical Panel Still Matters

Overall service capacity is only part of the installation.

The electrical panel also needs to have a suitable way to supply the charger circuit.

An electrician will typically look at:

  • The main service rating
  • Available breaker space
  • Existing electrical loads
  • Panel condition
  • Charger specifications
  • Distance to the charging location

A panel with no available breaker space may require additional work even if the service itself has enough electrical capacity.

Charger Location Can Affect the Installation

A charger installed on the opposite side of the garage or outside near the driveway may require more material and labour.

  • Have a larger battery
  • Support a different charging rate
  • Have the charge port in another location

Planning for reasonable future use can make the installation more flexible without automatically oversizing everything today.

A 100-amp service is not an automatic reason to abandon plans for Level 2 charging.

The important question is whether the existing electrical system has enough capacity for the charger you want to install.

For some Richmond Hill homes, the existing service may be sufficient.

For others, load management may provide a practical solution.

And in homes with higher electrical demand or several future upgrades planned, increasing the service capacity may be the better long-term approach.
